Pin of the Day: Rifle Paper Company

This is really sort of a hybrid post – it’s my Pin of the Day and also a Website to Watch…in that I want you to check out this amazing paper company’s website! If you are lucky enough to live in Central Florida like me, you can go to their ADORABLE shop in Winter Park, or one of the many amazing stores they are in across the country! Here are a few of my favorite designs:

Whoa. I just blacked out for a second. So, this is an “image heavy” post. I mean, how wonderful is their stuff? I love stationery and really all things paper so their designs are extra thrilling for me but there’s no denying they’re all beautiful. These designs (and many more to come) can be found on my Paper Portfolio Board.

Pinterest strikes again!

Website to Watch: Rent the Runway

This installment of Websites to Watch is a fabulous GUEST POST coming to the Rainy Day Box from Katie Peterson! Katie is a crazy genius/ law student/ fashionista/ nerd/ beauty expert. She’s also my kid sister. I’m thrilled to have her bring her brilliance to The Rainy Day Box! A little about her: Katie loves bows, puppies, politics, pashminas, iced skinny vanilla lattes, speaking German for no reason, Lilly Pulitzer, whiskey, Froyo, chicken nuggets (this should have been her), Hunter boots, anything monogrammed, and cold weather. She is also in the process of convincing me to use this fantastic website, Rent the Runway!

Follow her on Twitter @KEP1017 for her own mix of celebrity gossip, makeup pointers, fashion advice, and general complaints. Retweet with any suggestions for posts!

What do you do when you are a grad student with no money, even less free time, and a black-tie event around the corner? You Rent the Runway, of course!

RTR has a massive collection of designer dresses available to rent for a variety of special occasions. They have flirty cocktail dresses, stunning floor-length numbers, and a full selection of Hervé Léger’s famous(ly expensive) bandage dresses. You can even snag a classic Lilly Pulitzer creation for the next engagement/bridal/baby/insert-life-stage-here shower you attend!

RTR’s claim to fame is their “up to 90%” savings on luxury dresses and accessories. For example, this deceptively simple Hervé Léger gold bandage dress (left) retails for $2,800. You can rent it for the weekend for $200.

This gorgeous Badgley Mishka number (right) is $795 off-the-rack, and only $150 to your mailbox. Do I have your attention yet?

After spending the first few weeks of the semester locked away in the library, I was more than ready to trade my trusty sweatpants for a ball gown. Luckily, Barrister’s Ball (aka Law School Prom) was just around the corner. I love getting dressed up; but, now that I’m a little older, a $99 department store clearance rack taffeta creation doesn’t cut it. I needed something nice, and, naturally, I didn’t want to pay for it!

I was a bit wary about a) not being able to try anything on, and b) potentially destroying a $500+ dress that I can’t afford to replace.

Once I logged on to Rent the Runway, I discovered the website is incredibly easy to use. Once you pick the dress of your dreams, you can select two sizes. RTR does a great job of describing the fit of each dress. If you’re totally lost, they have stylists available round-the-clock to chat. I once cornered a stylist for the better part of an hour and made her decide whether I should wear gold or bronze shoes with my dress. Seriously.

After you select your dress, RTR also takes the extra step of recommending the perfect undergarments, accessories, and nail polish to complete your look. You also have the option of ordering a back-up dress of equal-or-lesser rental value for just $25. For that price, I don’t know why you wouldn’t. Shipping is steep at $17.95, but pre-paid return envelopes are included in the price. Insurance is only $5 and it protects you against minor stains (a spilled drink, makeup, or muddy train) and minor damage (loss of sequins, busted seam, or a ripped zipper) – basically, unless you destroy it, you’re covered. If your dresses arrive and nothing works for you, you can send everything back for a full refund less shipping within 24 hours.

My dresses arrived on Friday, and I had an impromptu fashion show with my roommates (who also used RTR) to help me decide which dress to wear. I ultimately decided to wear Trina Turk’s Twilight Shimmer Gown. I could have paid $398 to wear this dress once and have it sit in the back of my closet all by its lonesome for the next ten years (let’s be honest, ladies). Instead, I paid $100 to rock this fabulous number for one magical evening. Monday morning, I popped it in my prepaid envelope and dropped it off at the post office on my way to class. It’s that easy!

I highly recommend RTR for your next event. Whether you’re on a budget, or have no time to get to the mall before your next event, RTR is my new go-to for all of my future special events!

Final Tips:

  • Rentals go fast, so reserve your dress/accessories at least 2-3 weeks ahead if possible.
  • The typical rental period is 4 days. Costs nearly double if you rent for 8 days, so unless you are going on a cruise or another vacation where you won’t be able to return your dresses right away, 4 days is plenty.
  • RTR allows you to filter your results – I recommend filtering by size and date, because there is nothing worse than falling in love with a dress and realizing your size isn’t available for the date you need it!
  • Pay particular attention to whether the dress runs large or small. Designer labels tend to run small, so size up for at least one of your selections.
  • Schedule your dress to arrive the day before the event. That way, you have some leeway on final accessories and undergarments!

PS: Use the code “WELCOME20” at checkout to save $20 on your first order!

xo, Katie

Website to Watch: Birchbox

Meet Birchbox, a beauty subscription service that delivers deluxe samples to your door every month…for just $10!

I have been a Birchbox member since December of 2010. Since then, I have seen the company grow and change in so many ways! Every month I look forward to seeing that pink box in my mail…it is always full of great stuff! Don’t just think makeup: it’s all beauty products, (face, body, nails, hair), but also great fragrances, beauty tools, lifestyle products (tea, snacks, laundry detergent, notebooks, mp3 downloads), you name it! When you find something you can’t live without, you can buy the full size in their shop.

Here’s the thing: To subscribe to Birchbox, you need to have an open mind. Sometimes what you get will not thrill you. Your Birchbox is only $10, shipped to your door, and I believe my subscription is well worth the money. Here is a photo of my March Box:

It contained a Twistband Hair Tie, a sample of Annick Goutal Petite Cherieessie® Luxeffects Nail Polish (I got “set in stones”!), Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Papers, and tarte LipSurgence™ lip tint. Both the nail polish and the tarte lip tint were full-size. That is worth $10, no?

You many notice the Teen Vogue logo on the box. Birchbox often partners with other companies (Like BaubleBar!) So I’ll begin my review of Birchbox’s features with partnerships!

Partnerships and Promos:

Birchbox does a great job of connecting you with other amazing companies. Off the top of my head, I remember collaborations with Cynthia Rowley, BaubleBar, Poppin, and Teen Vogue. When you go to buy products in their shop, check to see if they have any kind of promo happening, either for a free product or for extra points. I got a notebook and pen from Poppin for free once when I placed an order on Birchbox. Now I swear by their pens!

Beauty Profile:

Fill out your beauty profile to make sure Birchbox will send you samples suited to your beauty needs and preferences. A tip I’ll give about the Beauty Profile is: be careful about your answers. For example, I answered that I have curly hair. Which I do. But there was no way to add “Curly hair that I blow-dry straight”. So for months I got samples of products for curly hair. That is, for women who wear their hair curly. Once I changed it to “straight hair” I got some truly awesome samples, more than one of which I now use regularly. So really think about your answers!

Reward Points:

I love any company that rewards you for using their service. has their Bloom Dollars, BaubleBar has credits, and Birchbox has Points. For every 100 points you earn, you get $10 off in their store! Points add up quickly – you get points for purchasing your subscription, referring friends, answering surveys, giving feedback, and purchasing full-size versions of your samples. Make sure you review everything in your Birchbox every month to get 10 points per review!

Birchbox has a library of videos to help you use the products that come in the box and tutorials for makeup trends. They are a great added resource even if you do not subscribe.

Checkout Birchbox’s Blog for even more tips, to get connected to their fantastic community, and to hear about their many giveaways and prizes!

Birchbox Man:

Birchbox even has something for the men folk. Soon they are launching Birchbox Man, which has samples geared toward men. If you can convince your man to get one, good for you. I will be very interested to see what this service will offer!

So, have I convinced you? If you want to sign up, go here and start getting your beauty on!

Website to Watch: is a fabulous resource for all things makeup! They are a “Social Beauty Store” where each user contributes to the online community.

I especially love it because it is personalized! If you take some time to build your profile Bloom will generate recommendations for you based on skin type, coloring, hair type, beauty concerns, and personal beauty style, among others. Their “BEST4YOU” recommendations are based on your “beauty matches” or women whose profiles match yours.

Every user gets a “Beauty Cabinet” where all the items you have purchased show up and you can write your reviews. You can explore other users’ cabinets as well. It’s a wonderful way to see what people who have the same beauty needs as you have tried, what worked, and what didn’t. If your friends are on Bloom you can connect with them too and see what they are trying out. They have over 150 brands and are always adding more, so odds are they may have something you are looking for! I especially love that they have premium brands and less expensive drugstore brands! I swear by Maybelline falsies mascara and you can buy it on Bloom! So when you are trying to get over the $49 threshold for free shipping, you can grab stuff like that from Bloom and it comes straight to your door!

With every order you also get 3 trial size free samples. You get to pick 3 from 8-10 options and I have really loved most samples I have chosen. A great feature I have noticed is that they usually offer several products from the same line (for example both a facial cleanser and moisturizer) so you can try them together if you would like.

Ordering from Bloom is great because they guarantee their products for one full year! Their whole concept is that they do not want you to waste time or money buying the wrong beauty products ever again. All Bloom asks in return is that you share why your product didn’t work out. If you’re a VIP member (keep reading!) return shipping is free, otherwise it is $5.

Bloom Dollars:

You get at least 10% in rewards, called Bloom Dollars, on every purchase. I say at least because the site often offers promotions where you can get up to 30% back! Bloom Dollars are real dollars that go into your rewards account and can be used on any purchase. They expire 1 year from their issue date, so make sure to remember to use them up- I have paid $0 for more than one Bloom order because of my Bloom Dollars!

VIP Status:

Spend more than $100 in a 6-month period and you become a VIP! You get VIP status for the 6-month period in which you become a VIP and the next 6-month period after that. This is a little complicated. Their “6-month periods” begin in January and July, so if you joined VIP in June you would only enjoy VIP status for 1 month of the 6 month period in which you became a VIP, and then for the following 6 month period; basically from June to December. However, if you had become a VIP in January, you would have the full 6 month period in which you became a VIP and the following 6 month period as well, essentially getting VIP benefits for one year. See the difference? Make that VIP-qualifying purchase in June or July.

Let’s talk about what you get…it’s much more fun. VIPs get more promotions where you can earn extra Bloom Dollars, get exclusive access and previews of their products, a surprise birthday gift, and free shipping on returns! The best VIP perk if that if you spend more than $50, you get to pick your 3 trial size samples and 2 additional mid-size samples. If you spend $100 or more, you get 3 trial size, 2 mid-size, and 1 full-size product- absolutely free.

So, have I convinced you? Whenever I find something that I love I want to make sure not only do other people get to hear about it, but the company gets tons of customers- a company like definitely deserves it!

Join Bloom Today and fill out your profile, get some free samples, and start earning those Bloom Dollars!!!

Website to Watch Update: BaubleBar & DKNY Contest!

I have already sung my praises of BaubleBar, and their latest collaboration with DKNY is so gorgeous! To top it all off they are having a contest where you can win one of their AMAZING looks…just visit their facebook page here to add your comment for your chance to win! Make sure to comment on the actual picture of the pieces you like and you could win all the pieces in that collection! I picked the White Poppy Studs and Coffee Fusion Cuff. To die for!

Website to Watch: BaubleBar!

I have a couple of websites that I visit religiously. BaubleBar is one of my absolute favorites! I actually discovered BaubleBar when I won a contest from Birchbox (which will get its own post sometime soon). I won this bracelet which I absolutely adore:

BaubleBar Black Wood Pop Bracelet

After I got this bracelet, I went looking for more. I was hooked. BaubleBar is an innovative site and all their products are at once on trend and classic. Every Monday and Wednesday new looks arrive. I love that they categorize their pieces not only by type (earrings, necklaces, etc.), but also by Collection/Trend (right now they’re featuring tribal styles and cuff bracelets, among others). When you pick a piece, there are always suggestions at the bottom of the page referencing other pieces of jewelry that would coordinate well. While this usually makes me want to buy all the pieces, I also use it as a reference – usually I have something similar to their suggestion already in my jewelry box, which helps me make better style choices! As if that weren’t enough, there’s also a “Style Me For…” feature on each piece’s page that will suggest clothing choices that would work with that bauble for work, night, and day looks.

Most of the items on my Pinterest Bauble Board are from BaubleBar! It’s a great company and I have been really impressed with the quality of the items for their outstanding prices. And shipping! Shipping is always FREE both ways! So when you order something from BaubleBar you have nothing to lose if you don’t like what you order. But you will.

Speaking of price…

Buried Baubles!

Sign up for the Buried Bauble Friday e-mail!

One of BaubleBar’s best features is their weekly Buried Bauble hunt! Each Friday, they pick one of their gorgeous pieces to be marked down to $10. That’s right- $10 shipped to your door. They send out an e-mail Friday morning with a clue, and then you have to hop on the website and try to track it down! TIP: When you find it, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Buried Bauble logo for the $10 version of the item. Otherwise it will get added to your cart at full price. This is probably the most fun part of my Friday. My sister and I always chat each other about the Buried Bauble and, more often than not, eventually convince each other to buy it. I mean, you just can’t lose. Oh, and did I mention if the item comes in multiple colors, they are ALL $10 each? Yep.

Credits and The Vault

BaubleBar's Vault

Whenever you make a purchase (and you will) BaubleBar awards you with points to spend in The Vault. The Vault is a special section of their website with pieces you can only purchase with points. They are all pieces that have been for regular sale on their site, so they are not seconds or designed specifically for the Vault. It changes all the time so check back often!

So, have I convinced you? Whenever I find something that I love I want to make sure not only do other people get to hear about it, but the company gets tons of customers- a company like BaubleBar definitely deserves it! If you want to sign up, go here and be sure to use my invitation code: 1717254! Make sure you also sign up for that Buried Bauble e-mail!
